Sixto Martínez ha fatto il servizio militare in una caserma di Siviglia.
Al centro del cortile c'era una panchina. Vicino alla panchina stava sempre un soldato a montare la guardia. Nessuno sapeva perché si faceva la guardia alla panchina. Si faceva perché si faceva, e basta: giorno e notte, tutti i giorni e tutte le notti. L'ordine degli ufficiali si trasmetteva di generazione in generazione, e i soldati obbedivano. A nessuno venne mai un dubbio. Mai una domanda. Se si faceva così, come si era sempre fatto, un motivo doveva esserci.
E la faccenda continuava così finché a qualcuno, forse un generale, o un colonnello, venne in mente di andare a vedere qual era l'ordine originario. Ci fu da mettere sottosopra gli archivi, ma a forza di rimestare, alla fine si seppe. Facevano trentun anni, due mesi e quattro giorni da quando un ufficiale aveva piazzato un soldato di guardia alla panchina perché a nessuno capitasse di mettersi a sedere sulla vernice fresca.
